The production of Vi de Menorca IGP reaches its historical peak

The production of Wine from the Island of Menorca has increased by 46% this 2023 compared to last year. It is the highest production achieved since this quality designation was approved, within the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).

This increase follows the trend experienced in recent years in Menorca, where the wine sector has experienced a constant boom in production and sales . Currently, three categories of wine are produced on the island: wines from the land identified with the IGP Illa de Menorca, wines from the land with the IGP Illes Balears , and wine without a quality geographical designation .

We are facing 152.5 hectares of vines for winemaking (compared to 147 ha in 2022) among the different grape varieties suitable for making wine, with the IGP Vi de la Terra Illa de Menorca being the category to which most of the grapes harvested during 2023 have been allocated , with a total production of 325 tons (in 2022 they were 210 tons), obtained from a vineyard area of 84 hectares, and with a final volume of wine produced in this category of 1,982 hectoliters (in 2022 they were 55 ha and 1,356 hl, respectively). These figures represent an increase of 46% and are the highest achieved since this quality designation was approved.

Thus, with regard to the total production of wine during the year 2023, 88.4% has been produced as IGP Illa de Menorca , 8.4% as IGP Balearic Islands and 3.2% as a wine without a geographical indication of quality. The total of wine produced in Menorca was 2,242 hl (compared to 1,950 hl in 2022), with an increase of 15%, which is the highest volume since this crop was recovered more than 35 years ago, being distributed as follows:
